Portuguese Program Alumna Recognized by Learning Partnership

Congratulations to Manuela Sequeira (UofT's Portuguese Program alumna), principal at St. Clare Catholic School. She is among the school administrators being recognized by the Learning Partnership as one of Canada’s Outstanding Principals.

“This year’s group of Canada’s Outstanding Principals includes 40 dedicated and distinguished leaders from across Canada and I am truly humbled to be among them, and look forward to upcoming networking and learning opportunities,” says Ms. Sequeira. “Leading student achievement in the 21st Century in Toronto’s ever-changing, diverse multicultural city is both invigorating and challenging, but often it is in that challenge that creative thinking, proactive and systematic change can happen. I applaud The Learning Partnership for their initiative in celebrating and building educational leadership capacity across Canada.”

  

The honourees will participate in a week-long executive leadership training program at the prestigious Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto.

  

Manuela Sequeira has been with the board since 1991. She became a vice-principal in 2001, and has served as principal since 2003 at St. Monica, St. Mary of the Angels and now at St. Clare. She also served for a time as acting special education coordinator.

  

She was nominated in 2008 by staff for the Premier’s Award for Teaching Excellence-Excellence in Leadership (2008), was involved in Ministry and System-Wide Committees to improve student achievement and well-being and co-authored, with Nancy Steinhauer, an article for LSA-Real Stories: “We Are Not Good Until We Are All Good:  Closing the Learning Gap at All Levels, outlining a structure of developing instructional leadership in all principals. During her term as principal at St. Mary of the Angels, the school was recognized by the Fraser Institute with the Garfield Weston Award for improvement in Academics.

Healers is a documentary film about Gabi Veras’ personal journey exploring the important role of the female healers in rural and remote areas of northeast Brazil.

Healers (2013) Directed by Gabi Veras

This story began in 2010 with Veras’ journalistic project concerning the impact of  female leaders in poor rural communities in north-east Brazil. This professional  experience soon became a personal journey about hope, a promise, and a re-encounter. Healers tells the story of a woman known as Dona Josefa who has been  a health care worker, midwife, and community leader for over 50 years. Besides  taking care of villagers, she can deeply affect people who cross her path, like  filmmaker Gabi Veras—who had a dream of becoming a mother. After a promise  made by Veras, the director returns to Sertão—Brazil’s most neglected area—and  discovers the world of herbal medicine.  Healers shows that despite the lack of support from authorities in these remote  areas, traditional medicines which combine prayer with the use of herbs are slowly  making governments realize their power. Today, some communities in the region  that have been served by these herbal-based treatments have shown themselves to  have efficient, trustworthy, and economical systems of alternative medicine.  Intrigued by such an effective way of promoting health, Veras takes the viewer on  her personal journey, uncovering an unconventional world that exists and functions  thanks to women like Dona Josefa.

Gabi Veras
Born on a tropical island, Gabi Veras has spent more than 15 years in newsrooms  both in Brazil and Canada. She has been a freelance journalist for CBC Radio  and Radio Canada International. Most recently she was as a producer for CBC  Newsworld, and also for OMNI Television in Toronto and Calgary. Telling  compelling human stories through documentary has always been her passion. In  2001, she co-produced Avi Lev’s documentary We Are Samba.

 Brasileira com 25 anos de jornalismo em rádio, televisão e revista. Isabel Raupp Pimentel morou em cinco diferentes países e no último ano estudou Relações Públicas e Relações governamentais aqui em Toronto.

FEBRUARY 4 @ 3pm – “O Factual versus o pessoal no documentário” com Gabi Veras

Em 2010, Gabi Veras começa com um projeto jornalístico sobre o impacto de líderes feminas nas comunidades rurais do nordeste do Brasil. Esta experiência pessoal se torna logo numa jornada pessoal pelo sertão sobre esperança, promessa e um encontro. O encontro é com uma mulher conhecida como Dona Josefa, que tem sido uma profissional da saúde, parteira e líder de comunidade há mais de 50 anos. Intrigada com a forma tão eficaz de tratamento através de ervas e rezas, Veras leva o espectador a descobrir um mundo não-convencional que existe e funciona graças a mulheres como Dona Josefa.

FEBRUARY 11 @ 3pm – “Formas de tratamento no Português brasileiro: O uso do você” com Thiago Bolivar

Este é um trabalho de investigação sociolingüística sobre o uso de formas de tratamento em interações comerciais em Porto Alegre, RS. Foi analisado o uso de formas de tratamento por parte de vendedores do comércio local, no atendimento a clientes, sendo que demos especial atenção para a forma você ao verificarmos que, quanto mais alto o contexto socioeconômico, maior a frequência de uso dessa forma. O trabalho também apontou um comportamento diferenciado entre homens e mulheres nessa situação, sendo a frequência de você entre as últimas bastante superior à mesma frequência entre os primeiros.

O trabalho da escritora e professora Irene Marques é caracterizado por uma profunda investigação filosófica onde o indivíduo aparece como uma entidade em constante busca do "todo" em um mundo marcadamente sociopolítico que divide, disseca, aniquila, humilha e rejeita inteligências (não-racionais) multidimensionais e seus caminhos iluminados. Suas narrativas são complexas, multifacetadas, transculturais, trans-históricas e trans-temporais recheadas de alegorias, metáforas, lirismos e realismos mágicos.

Irene Marques é professora de literatura e estudos africanos nas universidades de Toronto e York. Truck driver travelling along the Transamazonic Road, a huge highway in Brazil that crosses the Amazon forest, meets a prostitute and slowly becomes aware of the problems in that region. Iracema is an amazing film that discloses the truth about the development of Amazonas, reason why the censorship of the dictatorship has not allowed its exhibition in movie theaters for many years. In the 1970's, the Brazilian military dictatorship opened a highway though the Amazon forest and the official speech was that this road would bring development to the area settling landless peasants. However, what this movie denounces is the beginning of the announced ecological disaster through the uncontrolled burning of the forest and illegal extraction of wood; slave work; infantile prostitution; corruption. The screenplay and the shootings uses the improvisations of the gifted actor Paulo César Peréio, who interacts with the locals, blending reality with fiction, a sort of "fictional documentary" directed by Jorge Bodansky and Orlando Senna, filmed in direct cinema style of Pierre Perrault and cinéma vérité of Jean Rouch. (IMDB 7.1/10).

Brazil Film Series is a partnership between the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Toronto, the Consulate General of Brazil in Toronto, the Rio Film Commission (RFC), and the University of Toronto Libraries, which aims to promote the Brazilian culture and to acknowledge the Portuguese language in line with the directives of the Cultural Department of the Ministry of the External Relations of Brazil. This showcase is addressed to those who, in Toronto, are interested in Brazil, aiming not only at the academic community but also at the community at large. Each film will be shown with English subtitles (exceptions will be noted) and it will be introduced by a guest speaker. This showcase will be running every first Thursday of the month until April 2016. )

Rio de Janeiro. Maria Alice (Marieta Severo) lives in an old luxurious home at the proximity of a favela with her mother, daughter and granddaughter. She works as a free-lancer translator, even for her drug dealer neighbors, but she knows that the only way to solve her problems is selling the house. Given its proximity to a slum, they find themselves also unable to sell or rent it. When the UPP (Special Police Unit) occupies the community, potential buyers come to see the house. However, during their visit a shootout begins, leaving everyone trapped inside. While facing life threats, little sins are revealed by visitors and residents as tragicomic situations start to happen. He is a journalist, a language teacher, musician and visual artist from Rio de Janeiro, where at the age of 15 he became the youngest member of the Brazilian Society of Fine Arts. He was director and editor of newspapers and magazines published in Brazil and Canada.
