As marcas do português brasileiro

As marcas do português brasileiro

CALL FOR PAPERS – IV International Conference The Voice of Grandparents

Call for Papers deadline: April 30th, 2015

THE VOICE OF GRANDPARENTS: IDENTITY, MEMORY, AND CULTURAL HERITAGE

September 11-13, 2015 – University of Toronto, Canada

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Toronto organizes the IV International Conference on “The voice of grandparents: identity, memory, and cultural patrimony” which will take place on September 11, 12 and 13, 2015, at the ROBARTS library, located at 130 St. George Street, on the University campus.

An initiative of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, this conference is organized at the University of Toronto for the first time. It will give continuity to the work presented at the three conferences previously organized in partnership with: the University of the Azores, in 2009 and 2013, and the Universidade Aberta and Pro Dignitate Foundation, in 2011.

The conference seeks to “give a voice” not just to grandparents but also to grandchildren in an increasingly mobile and fragmented society. Aiming to reflect on an interdisciplinary area of study, researchers from all continents and scientific fields are invited to share their studies. The area of research we are aiming to cover includes relevant topics, such as: grand-parenting, intergenerational relations, identity formation, the sense of belonging, the discovery of roots, the transmission of values and cultural heritage, and the wealth of affect that elders bring to grand-parenting.

Immigrant grandparents play an important role in these areas. Better knowledge of the impact of the grandparents’ presence in the lives of grandchildren, and more studies on the effects of co-habitation may contribute to the implementation of favorable policies, thereby contributing as well to an improvement of family life in the country of origin and/or in the host country.

Due to its size, the Portuguese Diaspora presents challenges that a forum of researchers assembled in a space fit for dialogue, debate, and the sharing of knowledge might be able to address.

CONFERENCE THEMATIC AREAS:

1) Identities

This theme relates to processes linked to personal, social and cultural identity formation, to the intersecting of cultures and traditions, and to the relationship of migrants with the country of origin and the host country.

2) New concepts of family and intergerational relationships This theme reflects the new types of contemporary families and the change

processes operated by the different actors that compose them, with a focus on the relationships among generations, in particular on the current role of grandparents.

3) Language, literature, arts and media

This theme covers the representation of relationships between grandchildren and grandparents in literature, cinema and the other arts, in the media and on the internet.

4) Cultural Heritage

This theme deals with the role of grandparents as transmitters of knowledge and culture, namely family histories, moral values, religion and beliefs, fun and games, gastronomy, language and other aspects of the cultural heritage.

5) Health, education and quality of life

This theme focuses on the influence on the mental, physical health, and solidarity that result from the modes of relating across generations, as well as on the learning exchanges that take place between grandparents and their grandchildren.

SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS

Proposals for papers or posters for the IV Conference should be sent until April 30, 2015, to:

TIME:    7:00 pm
Screening 1 (Mar 5, 2015):

Found Memories (Histórias que só existem quando lembradas, Brazil, 2011) Directed by Julia Murat

Each citizen of Jotuomba plays an integral role in village life. Madalena is responsible for baking bread; each morning she stacks her rolls as Antonio prepares the coffee. The two share a morning ritual of arguments and insults, followed by an amicable cup of coffee on the bench outside Antonio’s shop. At midday the church bells ring, summoning the villagers to mass. In the early evening, they all share a meal together. And so life proceeds in Jotuomba, the days languidly drifting into one another. The only variations seem to be in the weather. One day Rita arrives looking for a place to stay. She came upon the village while traveling through the valley, following the unused railroad tracks. She is a photographer, intent on capturing the village’s special allure. Initially reticent, the townsfolk gradually open up to her, sharing their stories and allowing themselves to be photographed. Rita is comfortable with technologies old and new, and Madalena teaches her to knead dough by the light of an oil lamp. Only the village priest continues to find Rita’s presence worrisome, especially when she begins asking about the locked cemetery. It was awarded in several international film festivals, including San Sebastian, Lima, Reykjavik, and Washington DC.

Screening 2 (Mar 12, 2015):

Tabu (Portugal, 2012) Directed by Miguel Gomes
A Portuguese explorer making his wistful way through the wilds of Africa, haunted by ghosts and threatened by crocodiles, is a character in a movie that is watched by Pilar (Teresa Madruga), a middle-aged single woman living in modern Lisbon. Her unadventurous, middle-class euro zone existence is melancholy in its own way. Like the explorer, Pilar is filmed in narrow-screen black-and-white, which casts a glow of nostalgic mystery over her everyday dealings with friends and neighbors. She teams up with her deceased neighbor’s maid to seek out a man who has a secret connection to her past life as a farm owner at the foothill of Mount Tabu in Africa. It has received many prizes, including two awards at Berlin Film Festival.

Screening 3 (Mar 19, 2015):

City of God (Cidade de Deus, Brazil, 2002) Directed by Fernando Meirelles

Cidade de Deus is an overwhelming film about the life of the notorious outer suburb of Rio de Janeiro of the same name, based on a book by Paulo Lins. The streets of the world’s most notorious slum are a place where combat photographers fear to tread, police rarely go and residents are lucky if they live to the age of 20. In the midst of the oppressive crime and violence, a frail and scared young boy will grow up to discover that he can view the harsh realities of his surroundings with an artistic eye. In the face of impossible odds, his brave ambition to become a professional photographer becomes a window into his world and ultimately his way out. Nominated for 4 Oscars, including Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Screening 4 (Mar 26, 2015):

Neighboring Sounds (O Som ao Redor, Brazil, 2012) Directed by Kléber Mendonça Filho

Meandering past the residents of a wealthy street in Recife, where private security guards ply their trade, this self-assured debut portrays the two sides of the Brazilian Dream. Filho scratches the varnish of a culture that revolves around paranoia, fear and revenge. In Neighboring Sounds, the director builds soundscapes not with pulverizing sonic waves but with a dog’s insistent bark, the faraway chatter of children playing, the sudden crash of cars at an intersection. Rather than a global apocalypse, the events depicted here are little more than a languid handful of days at an affluent block in the northeast city of Recife. Under Mendonça Filho’s wily direction, however, this seemingly low-key stroll through upper-class Brazilian streets and apartments turns out to be just as chocked with anxiety. Won many prizes around the world, including in the festivals of Rotterdam, São Paulo, Manila, Porto and Toronto Film Critics.

Trailer: http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi3490030105/?ref_=tt_ov_vi

Introduced by Mike Filippov

In Vanda’s Room @ Media Commons Theatre

Luso-Brazilian Film Screenings: Diaspora & Exile @ the Media Commons Theatre presents

In Vanda’s Room

(No Quarto da Vanda, Portugal, 2000)

Directed by Pedro Costa

Introduced by Kass Banning (Cinema Studies Institute)

PLACE: Media Commons Theatre (Robarts Library, 3rd Floor)

DATE: November 27, 2014

TIME: 6:30 p.m.

With the intimate feel of a documentary and the texture of a Vermeer painting, Pedro Costa’s In Vanda’s Room takes an unflinching, fragmentary look at a handful of self-destructive, marginalized people, centered around the heroin-addicted Vanda Duarte. French philosopher Jacques Rancière identifies in the film a force that lies in the tensions between the settings of a miserable life and its inherent aesthetic possibilities: Pedro Costa “films are about a situation seemingly at the heart of the political issues of today: the fate of the exploited, of people who have come from afar, from former colonies in Africa, to work on Portuguese construction sites; people who have lost their families, their health, sometimes even their lives, on those sites, and who yesterday were dumped in suburban slums and subsequently moved to new homes—better lit, more modern, not necessarily more livable. There is no aestheticizing formalism or populist deference in the attention Pedro Costa pays to every beautiful form offered by the homes of the poor, and the patience with which he listens to the oftentimes trivial and repetitive words uttered in Vanda’s room […] The attention and the patience are inscribed, instead, in a different politics of art. This politics is a stranger to that politics which works by bringing to the screen the state of the world to make viewers aware of the structures of domination in place and inspire them to mobilize their energies. […] The politics here, rather, is about thinking the proximity between art and all those other forms which can convey the affirmation of a sharing [partage] or shareable [partageable] capacity.” Jacques Rancière

All movies are in Portuguese with English subtitles.  Each movie will be introduced and contextualized by Luso-Brazilian studies specialists, and a Q&A session will follow each screening.
